Clara Battista

BATTISTA, Clara Bernadette, 93, of Weirton, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013, at the Weirton Geriatric Center.

Born on May 5, 1920, in Weirton, WV, Clara was a daughter of the late Konstanty “Gus” and Josephine (Luczak) Rybka.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Steve Almason, Sr.; her second husband, Pete Battista; a son, Steve Almason, Jr.; step-son, Pete Battista, Jr.; brothers, John and Frank Rybka; sisters, Helen Rusinovich, and Sophie and Minnie Vagnoni.

Clara was employed by Weirton Steel for about five years, but for most of her life she was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary. In her free time she enjoyed playing bingo and participating in card clubs.

She is survived by a son, David Almason of Charlotte, NC; daughters-in-law, Karen Almason, Sally Almason and Sandi Wystacki; a step-daughter, Toni Applegate; grandchildren, Stevie (Allison) Almason III, Shannon (Erica) Almason, Monica (Michael) Smith, Gary (Cecelia) Battista, Tom (Angela) Battista, Scott (Kim) Applegate, Maggie (Sean) Grier, Johnna Applegate; great-grandchildren, Mitch Almason, Sarah and Tyler Battista, Emily and Morgan Grier; and sister-in-law, Goldie Almason Baly.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Mass of Christian of Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church.

Rev Fr. Manuel Gelido will preside.

Interment will follow at Saint Paul Cemetery, Weirton.
