Leonard Ellis

ELLIS, Leonard Rhoades, 91, of Follansbee, WV, passed away on the Marine Corps 238th Birthday, Sunday, November 10, 2013, at Valley Hospice Care Center North, Steubenville, OH.

Leonard was born on April 23, 1922, in Shinnston, WV. He was the son of the late Sherman Ellis and Margaret (Knight) Ellis King.

Leonard served as a corporal in the 4th United States Marine Corps Division during World War II in Iwo Jima receiving a Silver Star and Purple Heart. Leonard was a member of the Tri-State Marine Corps, Band of Brothers and the Follansbee United Methodist Church. He retired from Weirton Steel Corp. after 30 years of service.

In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret “Lorene” Ellis.

Leonard is survived by his two daughters, Gloria (Darrell) Thompson of Follansbee, WV, and Joyce (Steve) McCallister of Fairmont, WV, two grandsons, Evan (Kelsi) Jackson of Morgantown, WV, and Shawn (Lyndsay) Jackson Oklahoma City, OK, and a great-grandson, Keller Rhodes Jackson.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, from 4-8 p.m. and again on Thursday, November 14, 2013, from 10 until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. at the James Funeral Home, 1245 Main St., Follansbee, WV, (304) 527-1717 with Pastor Penny Calmbacher officiating.

Interment will follow at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV, with military honors by the United States Marine Corps, Tri-State Marine Corps, and the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad.
