Richard Canestraro

CANESTRARO, Richard W. Sr., 81, of Wadsworth, OH, formerly of Steubenville, OH, entered into the arms of our Eternal Father, peacefully surrounded by his loving Family on Thursday, October 31, 2013. He fought a courageous battle with cancer.

Richard was born on September 21, 1932 in Steubenville, OH son of the late Giacondo and Anthetta Scarnechia Canestraro.

He was a graduate of Mingo High School class 1950 and was a graduate of the College of Steubenville where he met his wife of 53 years, Mary Gloria Borsellino Canestraro.

Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wadsworth, and a former member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Steubenville.

He leaves behind his devoted and loving family. Daughters, Karen, Jodi, and sons Richard Jr., Joseph (Linda). Also leaving behind his grandchildren Amber (Christopher), Jeffrey, Ricky, Bianca and Zoe; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Isabella, Daniel. Sister Dorothy (Nial) Pashke; sisters-in-law, Josephine (Thomas) Witschey and Angela (David) Archer ;and many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.

Richard retired as the Jefferson County Auditor with over 35 years of service. He also owned and operated Canestraro Accounting.

Richard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3213, Wadsworth, and Council 472, Steubenville, and also a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1766, Wadsworth and Father Bigelow Assembly, Steubenville.

He was a member and past President of the Steubenville Alumni Club of the Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity. Member and past President of the Steubenville Lion’s Club and member of the Steubenville Columbus Club.

He was a member and past Chairman of the Jefferson County Democratic Party which he served on the Executive Committee and was a Presidential Delegate.

His most enjoyable pastimes were Sunday dinners surrounded by his family, Saturday breakfasts with the boys, watching Ohio State Football with daughter Karen when he wasn’t attending the game with his son, Joe, and showing off his completely restored 1932 Ford Roadster.

Calling hours are: Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, OH.

A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Thomas Nau, Celebrant and Deacon Roger Klaas. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Steubenville.
