Ray Stevens

STEVENS, Ray E., 86, of Weirton, WV, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at home.

He was born April 24, 1927, at home to Charles and Virginia Rush Stevens, in Middlebourne “Muddy Creek,” WV, where he also later met his future wife, Dorothy Weekley.

Ray joined the United States Navy on May 3, 1945, and married Dorothy, while on furlough on July 3, 1945.

While in the Navy, he served on the U.S.S. Sirus AK 15. Ray and Dorothy moved to Weirton in 1946 when he began working for Weirton Steel. Ray worked for Weirton Steel until his retirement in 1984 after 38 years of service in the Hot Strip Mill as a heater.

He was a 32nd degree Mason of Weirton Lodge 171 A.F.&A.M. Ray was an avid antique collector, gardener, and fisherman. He took great pride in his flower and vegetable gardens and was featured in the Weirton Daily Times for his nine foot tall tomato plants.

Ray and Dorothy enjoyed blue grass music and often traveled to fairs and festivals to enjoy live performances. Ray was a regular at the Roger’s Flea Market every Friday on his quest for a rare antique, the best buy in produce, and a hot sausage sandwich.

Ray also enjoyed the Christmas season and took great pride in his Christmas displays. His Christmas displays dazzled his family and filled the neighborhood with Christmas cheer. Ray was the proud father of six children, 15 grand children, 18 great-grand children, and two great- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Lee Stevens; brothers, Norman, Leslie, and Charles Stevens; sisters, Eunice Edna Stevens and Pearl Wade.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Weekley Stevens; daughters, Alice and Edward Kuprowitz and their children, Kimberly Bowers, Kristen, Susan, and LeAnn Kuprowitz; Linda and Richard Cuprik and their children, Michele Slates, Nicole Harris, and Debbie Cuprik; Joyce and Gary Hinchee and their son, Steven Hinchee; son, Larry and Janet Stevens and their children, Shannon McClain, Stacy, Amanda and Stephanie Stevens; son, Mark and Terri Stevens and their children, Julie, Chelsea, and Kelley Stevens; brothers, Jack Stevens (Carla), Virgil Stevens, Ronald Stevens (Linda); sister, Jo Ann McSwegin.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 19, 2013, 6-8 p.m, Friday, December 20, 2013, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 380 Penco Road, Weirton, WV, where the funeral will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Donald Stilgenbauer presiding.

Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with Masonic service by Weirton Lodge 171 A.F. & A.M.
