Dohrman W. ‘Doc’ Byers
BYERS, Dohrman W. “Doc,” 84, of Stratton, OH, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2014, at the Trinity Medical Center – West, Steubenville, OH.
He was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Stratton, OH.
Doc was a member of the Empire United Methodist Church, Empire, OH; Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1276; Toronto American Legion Post 86; former Village of Stratton, OH councilman and former member of the village volunteer fire department; former Sugar Grove Union Cemetery board member; 1949 graduate of Toronto High School where Doc was an outstanding athlete playing on the Toronto High School undefeated 1948 football team and was selected to play as a center on the 1949 Eastern Ohio All Star football team.
He served his country during the Korean War serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from the Bricklayers Local Union 14, Steubenville, OH after 50 years and had served his union as business agent for several years.
Doc was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa A. (Bodnar) Byers who passed away Oct. 12, 1998 and whom he married Feb. 11, 1957; parents, George “Shorty” and Beulah (Burns) Byers; sisters, Imogene Coulter and Beverly “Beck” Vinburg; brothers, George “Bud”, Jack “Annie”, Dean “Diz”, and Tom Byers.
He is survived by his daughters, Beverly (Lee) Ellard of Wichita Falls, TX and Betsy (Timothy) Miller of Toronto, OH; grandchildren, Glenn Carlton Tupper and Tomie Leanna Ellard both of Wichita Falls, TX; loving companion, Betty Kelly of Toronto, OH.
Visitation hours for Doc will be held 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23rd, at the Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main St., Toronto.
A celebration service of Doc’s life will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home with Pastor Susan Clegg officiating.
Following Doc’s service there will be full Military Honors by the Toronto American Legion at the funeral home.
Interment will be at the Sugar Grove Union Cemetery.
Following Doc’s services at the funeral home, friends and family are invited to go to the Stratton Municipal Building, Stratton, OH for a luncheon. There will be no procession to the cemetery.
Memorial contributions in memory of Doc may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
