A funeral service celebrating the life of Charles J. Franke, Sr., 92, of Heath, will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at the Heath Chapel of Henderson- Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service.
Mr. Franke was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Steubenville, OH, to the late Elwood and Helen (Gold) Franke. He passed away at his home on Friday, March 7, 2014.
Mr. Franke retired as a conductor with the Pennsylvania Railroad after 42 years of service. He was a Boy Scout leader and long remembered his trip with the scouts to Philmont in the 1950’s. He was a member of the F &AM Pilgrim Lodge 691 in Steubenville and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Mr. Franke, after retiring, built several homes in the Licking County area. He acted as the general contractor and was always there to assist in the building. He also enjoyed running in marathons until age 75, an accomplishment of which he was very proud.
He is survived by three children, Charles J. Franke, Jr., of Heath, Frederick E. Franke of Reynoldsburg and Susan “Sue” (Dave) Evans of NY; six grand children; numerous great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Robert Marshall of FL; numerous nieces and nephews and his dog, Tommy II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Lila (Smith) whom he spent 34 years of marriage, and passed in 1975; and Audrey (Titterington) whom he spent 37 years of marriage, and passed in 2014; a daughter, Sandra Lee Franke-Marshall and a grandson, Robert Michael Marshall.
Calling hours will be held prior to the service at the Heath Chapel from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, where Masonic Services will take place at 6 p.m. Burial will take place in Steubenville at Union Cemetery, on Wednesday, March 12, at 11 a.m.
