Harold 'Bub' Tipton

TIPTON, Harold L. “Bub,” 73, of Jewett died Monday, March 17, 2014, in Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville.

Born March 30, 1940, in Hopedale, he was a son of the late Fred and Nellie Cox Tipton. A 1958 graduate from Hopedale High School, he worked at the Shoemaker Mine in Benwood, WV, for 35 years, retiring in 2002 and was a farmer all of his life.

On October 8, 2010, “Bub,” along with his Hopedale Comet teammates from 1955, was inducted into the Harrison County Sports Hall of Fame. He continued his love of sports throughout his life and could always be seen in the stands supporting Harrison Central athletes. He was a member of the local UMW, Jewett Sportsman’s Club and Coon Hunters Assoc. He raised, trained, and raced field trial dogs, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife Lottie Coleman Tipton, who he married August 28, 1958; a son, Roger Tipton of Jewett; a daughter, Christine (Ed) Doody of Northville, MI; grandchildren John, Jacob, Jared, Elijah, Grace, and Caroline; siblings Lola Carman of Hopedale, William Tipton of Moundsville, WV, and Donna Ryder of Jewett and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Hannah Doody, and brothers Harry, Ray, Gale, and Jimmy.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Koch Funeral Home, Scio, Ohio, with Pastor John Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Jewett. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
