John L. Hellock

HELLOCK, John L., was born April 1, 1923, to the late Michael and Anna (Szalaki) Hellock of Mingo Junction, OH.

He attended Mingo Junction High School, before serving our country as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and then in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He received the Purple Heart for his services in the Pacific, including the Battle of Okinawa. Upon his discharge from the Marines in 1945, he began serving his apprenticeship as a brick mason under the G.I Bill.

On April 18, 1946, John married Ruth “Imogene” Culp. He described their marriage as the best thing that ever happened to him. In their Wintersville home, the couple raised their three children and celebrated 67 years of marriage.

John’s career as a masonry contractor spanned more than 40 years, as he worked with Guy Johnston Lumber and Supply Co., Gilchrist Lumber, Dixon Realty, Wells Construction, Ken Cornish Construction, and Klaus Construction to build countless homes, schools, churches, and businesses throughout Jefferson County and beyond. He belonged to the Bricklayers Union Locals 10 and 14. John was also a member of the Wintersville United Methodist Church and the Mingo Junction Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, reading, and always cheered for the Browns.

John passed away on March 3, 2014, after a six-week illness, less than a month shy of his 91st birthday.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his siblings Anna, Michael, Libby, Steve, and Joe.

He is survived by his sister, Emily Yentsch of Ocean City, NJ; his brother, George of Mingo Junction; his wife, Imogene of Steubenville; their children, Douglas (Loretta) of Wintersville, Dana (Darlene) of Wintersville, and Diane (David Kuntzman) of Alliance; six grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Thursday from 10:30 until the time of funeral service at 12:30 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Clint Quillen officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Steuben.
