Dorothy Lee Higgins

HIGGINS, Dorothy Lee, 93, of Weirton, died Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at her home with her family at her side.

Born on October 12, 1920, in Midway, PA, Dorothy was a daughter of the late William and Martha Bamford Lescallette.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Lester “Les” Higgins; her son, Paul R. Higgins; six brothers, and three sisters.

Dorothy was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a very dedicated member of the Follansbee High School Boosters. When her son played football and her daughter played in the band, she never missed a game, as she volunteered in the concession stand.

Dorothy was also a secretary and bookkeeper for her husband’s trucking business, and quite often would travel with him on the road. She never met a stranger, and will always be remembered for her legacy of music that she passed down to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a former leader of the 4-H and was formerly active at Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School. She also attended Homewood Baptist Church, and Resurrection Lutheran Church in Weirton, and First Baptist Church in Steubenville.

She is survived by her daughter, Lucille (Rev. Fred) Wilkins of Steubenville, OH; her daughter in law, Diane Higgins of Follansbee, WV; her seven grandchildren, Lesli (Robert) Johnston of Zebulon, NC, Robert (Shelley) Higgins of Colliers, WV, Jennifer (Dan) Shively of Westerville, OH, Sarah Wilkins of Cashmere, WA, Mary Blake of Wheeling, WV, Jonathan (Anna) Wilkins of Knoxville, TN, Rachel Wilkins of Columbus, OH; great-grandchildren, Hannah Shively, Abigail Shively, Rebekah Shively, Madilyn Blake, Katherine and Robert Johnston, Paul, Franchesca, and Kaya Higgins.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. The Reverend Fred Higgins will officiate.

Interment will follow at Paris Cemetery, Paris, PA.
