Eugene M. (Sam) Santille

SANTILLE, Eugene M. (Sam), 80, of Hopedale, OH died peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Gables Care Center in Hopedale.

Born May 15, 1933, in Hopedale, he was a son of the late Perrino (Pete) and Mary (Giacobbi) Santille. Eugene was also preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (Hall) Santille, who recently passed away on Feb. 21, 2014; two brothers, Raymond and Dean Santille; and two sisters Frances Harrah, and Anne DeNardi.

Eugene was a graduate of Hopedale High School Class of 1951. In 1953, he was inducted into the armed forces and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict with honorable discharge in 1955. Following his service, he worked for Polen Coal Company, The Hopedale Telephone Company, and Ameritech (formerly Ohio Bell Telephone Company, now AT&T) where he retired in 1995.

Eugene formerly served as Green Township Trustee for a number of years as well as assistant fire chief for the Hopedale Volunteer Fire Department where he was a member for many years. Additionally, he was a member of the Hopedale American Legion Post 682.

Eugene was an avid sportsman. He was a renowned grouse hunter, played a host of sports in his younger days including football while serving in the Army; adult-league basketball, baseball and softball, and he coached both little league and hot-stove baseball. He was a founding and lifetime member, and first president, of the Hopedale Sportsman’s Club with memberships also at Pine Valley Sportsmen’s Club and the Jewett Sportsman Club where he served in many different capacities.

He loved both horseshoes and corn bag toss and was exceptionally difficult to beat, winning several tournaments over the years.

Surviving are one son, Kelly (Denise) Santille of Hopedale; and three daughters, Cindy (Lee) Henderson of Massillon, OH, Shelley Anderson of Hopedale, Tammy Jo (Ray) Medovich of Westerville, OH; five grandchildren, Sara, Jessica, Michael, Kyle and Samuel; and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is sister, Helen O’Connell of Wheeling WV; and brother, Roger (Penny) Santille of Marengo, OH.

Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home at 324 High St. in Hopedale on Tuesday April 29, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with services there on Wednesday April 30, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens in Pleasant Grove, Ohio.
