Wilma L. Burskey

BURSKEY, Wilma Louise, died today, April 4, 2014, at the age of 94 in her room at the Grandview Care Center in Sun City West, AZ.

Wilma was born on June 15, 1919, in her parent’s home on Pearl St. in New Cumberland, WV. Her father was Lucas Simons and her mother was Mary Diermeyer Simons.

She was the 10th of 12 children in the Simons family. Two children died early in life. She had four brothers, Jack, John, Robert and Raymond, and five sisters, Genevieve, Sophia, Annie, Celia and Martha. Wilma was the last surviving child of the Simons family.

Wilma graduated from New Cumberland High School in 1932. She stayed in her home town working at different jobs until the beginning of World War II.

After the war started, she enlisted in the Womens Army Corps. She did her basic training at Ft. Oglethorpe in Georgia and was stationed at the Pine Bluff Arsenal in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She rose to the rank of Seargent and worked in the base PX. She received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1945 and returned to her home town.

She met and married Michael Steven Burskey, also of New Cumberland, in 1946. Their only child, a son named Christopher, was born in 1948.

Her husband, who retired from Weirton Steel, died in 1978. After his death, she sold the family home and moved to Weirton, WV, where she lived until 2001, when she moved to Surprise, Arizona, to live near her son.

Her health started to decline in 2011. After a small stroke and a broken hip suffered in a fall, she moved into Grandview Care Center on September 30, 2011, where she lived until her death.

Wilma will be cremated and her remains will be interred next to her late husband in the cemetery in New Cumberland, WV.

She requested that no flowers be sent nor any donations be made in her honor. Her only request is that her family and friends remember her in their thoughts and prayers.
