David A. Cottrell

COTTRELL, David A., a loving and caring husband, 76, of Toronto, OH, passed away at his home Feb. 28, 2014.

Dave was born Feb. 16, 1938, in Steubenville, OH, son of the late Donald C. and Elizabeth B. (Brayton) Cottrell.

He was a retired captain with the Toronto Fire Department.

Dave worked as a firefighter in Toronto from 1958-1995, becoming captain in 1980. He was one of the original founding members of the IAFF Local 2229, of which he served as president for 13 years. Dave was also a charter member of TEMS where he worked as an EMT and dispatcher.

Dave was a graduate of Toronto High School class of 1956; his work experience also included Hancock MFG in Toronto, the New Cumberland Locks and Dam, Jack Kelly Excavating, Terry Starr’s SOHIO & Towing and Tim Starr’s Towing, where he worked for many years upon retiring from the fire department.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, James B. and Donald C. Cottrell.

Dave leaves behind his wife, Alice “Kay” (Allen) Cottrell at home, whom he married December 4, 1976; his sister, Mary Beth Cottrell of Costa Mesa, CA; his brother, Harry K. Cottrell of Toronto; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind his best friends and “Dave’s Hero” Tim Starr and Norm Winstel and his Carriage Inn North Gang at Starr’s Towing.

A memorial service for Dave will take place on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the Toronto Fire Department, 602 S. Fourth St. in Toronto, where full fire department honors will be provided by the Toronto Fire Department and Toronto Volunteer Fire Department.

Dave’s arrangements are in the care of the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto.
