Sonia Elvina May Thompson, 97, of Blacksburg, Virginia, (formerly of Steubenville, Ohio; Dillonvale, Ohio; and Kings Lynn, England), passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford E. Thompson; and brother, Vernon Hastings.
Sonia is survived by her daughter, Dr. Sandra J. (Thompson) Moore and son-in-law, Dr. John F. Moore of Blacksburg, Virginia; brother-in-law, Charles Thompson of El Paso, TX; sister-in-law, Doris Richardson, formerly of Willoughby, OH; nieces and nephews, Derrick Hastings of Northwich, England, Linda Richardson- Brewer of Sloatsburg, NY, Tom Richardson of Herndon, VA, Joanne Eason of Dallas, TX, and Jeff Thompson of Dallas, TX; as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Sonia and Clifford moved to Virginia in 2004 to be closer to their daughter Sandra Thompson Moore. Clifford passed away November 1, 2005. Sonia lived with her daughter and son-in-law for five years before succumbing to late stage Alzheimer’s.
The family will always be thankful for Good Samaritan Hospice and the Arbor Memory Care staff at Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg for the excellent care they provided Sonia.
Sonia’s love of family, music and pets remained with her all her life even while dealing with the advancing effects of Alzheimer’s.
The family received friends on Friday, February 28, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at
Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, Virginia. The funeral service was held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Wanda Price officiating.
Local arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home, 154 Second Street, Dillonvale, Ohio. Cremains interment will be private at Grandview Cemetery, Scio, Ohio.
