John E. Gratchen, Sr., 94, died Wednesday July 16, 2014, at Valley Hospice. He was born October 6, 1919, in Joffre, PA. He is the son of the late Nicholas and Bessie Pendracky Gratchen;
John is also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and George “Butch,” and two sisters, Mary Tasz and Anne Kuzior.
John was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, American Legion Post 557, and the Slovene National Benefit Society. John retired from National Steel in 1984 as a millwright foreman, and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Pauchnik Gratchen, whom he married September 29, 1945; two sons, John E. (Pauline) Gratchen Jr. and Richard (Gwen) Gratchen both of Steubenville; one daughter, Patricia (William) Smith of East Liverpool; one brother, Andrew Gratchen of Atlasburg, PA; one sister, Frances (William) Prata of Bulger, PA; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Kathleen, Anthony, Danielle, and Kristy; and two great-grandchildren, Cody and Kandis.
Calling hours are Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd. A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Msgr. Kurt Kemo, celebrant. Entombment will be at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens. There will be a vigil service 3:45 p.m. Sunday. Full military honors will be conducted by the Tri-State Memorial Squad and the U.S. Navy.
