Meyer Denmark

Meyer Denmark, 93, passed away July 17, 2014, under the care of hospice.

Savannah surrounded by his family. Loving and cherished father of Sarah Denmark (Adam Solender) and Michael Denmark (Terri Cooper) of Satellite Beach, FL, grandfather of David Solender and Aaron Solender.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Phyllis Penn Denmark, and son, David Denmark; brother of Betty Monroe, and the late Samuel and Morris Denmark; and many nieces and nephews.

Meyer Denmark was born in Pittsburgh, PA and raised in Steubenville, OH, he graduated from Steubenville High School.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. Following the war he returned to Steubenville, and for close to half a century, was the co-owner of Denmark’s Fur Shop Inc., operating women’s clothing stores. He was extremely involved in a variety of local charities and causes including Temple Beth Israel, the Jewish Community Council, and Special Olympics.

Following his retirement, he moved to Sarasota, Florida and later to Savannah, GA, to be closer to his family. He was an avid golfer, and tennis player (actively playing well into his mid-80s). He loved to sail. Meyer will be remembered by his family and friends as a gentle man, known for his generosity, kindness, humility and deep love of family.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 20, 11 a.m. at Congregation Mickve Israel, 20 E. Gordon Street, Savannah. Memorial contributions may be made to the Savannah Jewish Federation Tikvah (Hope) Fund, 5111 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31405; or a charity of your choice.
