Donald Lowther

Donald “Harold” Lowther, 88, of New Manchester, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.

Born May 1, 1929, in Cairo, WV, Harold was a son to the late Lawrence Lowther and Opal Bircher Lowther, also of Cairo, WV.

Harold was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen Lowther; son, David Lee Lowther; son, Donald Wayne Lowther; grandson, Travis Wayne Lowther; brother, Ronald Lowther; and sister, Eileen Truman.

Taking after his father, Harold began working on the B&O Railroad at an early age. He and his wife, Helen, moved to the area for Harold to secure a job at the Weirton Steel Corporation in the early 1950s; 31 years later, in 1983, he retired as a railroad engineer. After retiring, Harold owned and operated, along with his family, The Village Square Restaurant in New Manchester, WV.

Harold was a Christian by faith and was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather; as well as a highly skilled mechanic; he was an avid car collector with a passion for hunting. He was a member of the New Cumberland Masonic Lodge #22 AF&AM, and enjoyed square dancing with his wife for many years, as a member of the Happy Square Dancers.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Janet Weston (Al) of New Manchester, WV; Judy Moore (Larry) of New Manchester, WV; Barbara Cantrell (Clay) of Anderson, SC; Joyce Hennen of Lynchburg, VA; sisters, Betty Sheets (Dick) of Greenwood, WV and Emma Lou McGinnis of Harrisville, WV; and brother, Paul Earnest ‘Bud’ Lowther (Patty) of Pennsboro, WV, along with 42 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Harold (Poppie) will be forever in our hearts.

At his request, Harold will be privately inurned at Shadow Lawn Memorial Gardens in Newell, WV. The Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester is charge of arrangements.
