Helen Aftanas

Helen (Tisik) Aftanas, 87 of Follansbee, WV, died peacefully on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at home.

She was born on April 25, 1930 in Avella, PA, a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Schubenski) Tisik. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Chester Richard Aftanas, on December 14, 2011, an infant grandson Rudolph Carl Sovinski, III, a brother LT. Mike Tisik missing since 1950 from over the Yukon Territory, and four sisters, Mary Olexia, Margaret Kuchinski, Ann Stasky, and Katherine Holmes.

Helen attended Follansbee High School. She retired from the Ohio Valley School of Nursing where she worked in housekeeping. She is also a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Helen was a charter member of the Wellsburg Art Association where she won many ribbons for her oil paintings.

She is survived by her only daughter Cheryl (Gary) Henthorn of Follansbee, WV and her one and only granddaughter whom she was very proud of, Michelle Renee (Scott) Hartman and her step grandson, Christian Hartman of Beaver, PA; three sisters, Julia Tisik of Cross Creek, WV; Stella Vilga of Cross Creek, WV; and Agnes (Albert) Flasko of Wellsburg, WV; one brother, George Tisik of Follansbee, WV; 5 Step Grandchildren, Gary Paul Henthorn of Follansbee, WV; Ryan (Amber) McCullah of New Smyrna Beach, FL; and Tim (Crystal) McCaddon of Edgewater, FL; 9 Step Great Grandchildren, Destiny and Haley Henthorn, Tristan, Kierston, Ashlinn McCullah, Kayla, Shannon, Seth, and Jamison McCaddon; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Helen’s caregivers, Bernadette Strader, Nancy Midcap, and Bessie Utz along with Dr. Saieed and his staff for the wonderful care Helen received.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 from 3-8 p.m. with a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Mullenbach Funeral Home 669 Main St. Follansbee, WV 26037.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 18th at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 1017 Jefferson St. Follansbee, WV 26037 with Rev. Fr. Cody Ford officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Johns Cemetery in Colliers, WV.
