Bowl game a time to help

Super Bowl weekend means many things to many people.

For the Weirton United Way, it has come to mean an opportunity to work toward hitting its fundraising goal for the annual campaign.

Feb. 2 will see the return of the United Way’s “Pre-Super Bowl” party, the Big Game Eve Tailgate Party, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Weirton Knights of Columbus Gallery.

It is sure to be a night of fun, with music, food, beverages and a chance to win a variety of prizes through a Chinese auction. There also is a drawing for the grand prize package of a 55-inch 3D television, a Blu-ray player and a $500 gift card.

The grand prize is sponsored this year by First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union and WTOV-TV9. We would like to thank them for their support.

More importantly, it is an opportunity for our area residents to contribute toward the Weirton United Way and its efforts to assist some of the many agencies which serve our community.

This will be the second year for this event, and if last year is any indication it is sure to be a packed house. We encourage residents to get their tickets early if interested in attending. Tickets are $10 if purchased ahead of time, and $15 the day of the event.

It is fast becoming a mainstay in the annual campaign, and we thank all those involved in its planning for their hard work. In particular, we wish to acknowledge Scott Winwood, president and chief executive officer of First Choice credit union, who first proposed the fundraiser while serving as the Weirton United Way’s campaign chair.

We encourage our residents to consider attending this great event next Saturday and contribute to the Weirton United Way as it continues to do such an amazing job uniting our community through its work.
