Do something ‘big’ for a child
Scores of local children are badly in need of help money can’t buy. They need “big brothers” and “big sisters” willing to spend time with them.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upper Ohio Valley has been matching adults with such children for many years. Men and women volunteer to spend time regularly with children in situations such as single-parent homes.
“Bigs,” as they are called, help their “Littles” with homework, give them advice, take them on recreational outings, serving, in essence, as very good friends who happen to be grown-ups.
The program can make an enormous difference in a child’s life.
But the local organization has a waiting list of about 120 children. There are just not enough “Bigs” to go around.
We know of people who have served as “Bigs,” and who found they had more time available than they thought. They also view the experience as one of the most rewarding of their lives.
If you are an adult with something to offer to children, please consider volunteering through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. For information, call 304-232-0520.
