Mingo remembers former teachers
Everyone can remember a special teacher from their childhood who had a big impact in their life.
Mingo Junction takes it a step further by honoring teachers and school staff with plaques at its Cherry Blossom Memorial Park.
Seven teachers and staff will be honored at a ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday at the village American Legion.
Family and friends will then be able to walk across the street to affix the plaques to the wall at Cherry Blossom Memorial Park.
The Mingo Junction Business Association started the project in 2007, when 27 cherry trees were planted at Cherry Blossom Memorial Park, located at the bottom of St. Clair Street, with 43 teachers and staff inducted in 2008.
The business association wanted to recognize teachers and staff of Mingo High School and Harmony, Hills, St. Agnes and Mingo Central schools. Mingo High School served the village for a century beginning in 1893.
The Cherry Blossom Memorial Park can accomodate 150 plaques. With the induction on Saturday, 86 plaques will have been placed at the park.
Mingo Junction is a small community that has a lot of pride. Residents still have fond memories of their school, which closed in 1993.
Mingo Junction also has a lot of pride in its history and recognizing hometown people who have gone on to do good things in their lives. It might be an athlete who excelled in college or in the pros. It also could have been a teacher who inspired his or her students to become educators.
Every community needs to recognize its history and Mingo Junction does that by honoring teachers and staff.
The business association also brings in pupils from Hills Elementary in the spring, where the kids are told about the history of the park and how to maintain the cherry trees. Another generation is being taught early to care for the town’s history.
There is still a lot of room for plaques to be placed at Cherry Blossom Memorial Park. If you were educated in Mingo Junction, consider nominating that special teacher or staff member who played a big part in your life.
