Wellness program a good example
Sometimes all it takes to become motivated is encouragement from another person.
Such is the case for John Balzano, a representative of United Steelworkers Local 2911, who is following in the footsteps of a very fit Jesse Lamone of ArcelorMittal. These two local men, as well as plant General Manager Brian James and Local 2911 President Mark Glyptis, are hoping a free regular physical fitness program for Weirton plant employees and their families will bring about an overall healthy lifestyle for all.
We’re guessing the Weirton Millsop Community Center and the YMCA Fitness Center at the former St. John Arena in Steubenville will be very busy in the coming months, thanks to this wellness program created by the USW and ArcelorMittal America.
The wellness team of Balzano, Lamone, James and Glyptis has a goal of initiating a comprehensive health screening for employees.
Team members will record employees’ usage through June to determine an overall interest in the wellness program and to determine if it’s working, and they’ve stepped up the game by offering an incentives program.
As a precursor to the free workouts, a health week was observed at the Weirton plant. Blood tests, blood pressure monitoring and COPD testing, as well as liver and thyroid tests were given. The plant also is observing Fresh Fruit Fridays, where apples, oranges and other fruits are made available to employees. And along those lines, 25 employees recently took part in the ArcelorMittal Global walk, which include two miles on the Panhandle Trail.
Furthering the commitment of the wellness team, the Weirton plant has started a Leave the Cart program, where employees are encouraged to walk around the large plant instead of using a cart, and each worker was given a pedometer to measure every step taken.
We commend the wellness team of the Local 2911 and ArcelorMittal for initiating the program and allowing employees and their families to get workouts free of charge. The small fitness steps taken inside the plant also show the desire for all to become more fit. Healthier employees are happy employees, it’s been proven, and we hope other area businesses can follow this lead.
