Area teams continue their playoff push
If you’re a fan of high school football, this is an important weekend.
While Steubenville Big Red and Catholic Central will be playing in the second round of the Ohio playoffs, Weirton Madonna will be opening a playoff run that fans are hoping will lead to the state championship game Dec. 7 in Wheeling.
Following a 10-0 season, the Dons are the top seed of the West Virginia Class A playoff rankings, and will host 16th seed Tucker County at 7:30 p.m. today at Jimmy Carey Stadium. Led by players such as Ross Comis, Eliott Nero, Will Bowser, Josh Martin and Nate Martin, it has been a memorable year we’re sure will be recalled for years to come.
The postseason is nothing new for the Blue Dons, with several appearances in recent years, including a run that resulted in the Class A championship in 2009.
While the Blue Dons will be playing their first playoff game, Steubenville Big Red will carry a 7-4 record into tonight’s Ohio Division IV second-round playoff game against Zanesville Maysville (8-3). That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at St. Clairsville.
Steubenville Catholic Central (9-2), meanwhile, will take on Glouster Trimble (11-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Zanesville in the second round of the Division VII playoffs.
No one knows right now how this weekend’s games will turn out. With that said, we wish our area teams well in this year’s playoffs.
