Still time to give to the United Way
With its final fundraiser of the 2013 campaign just over a week away, there is still time for residents to contribute to the Weirton United Way and help it to reach its $260,000 goal to benefit more than a dozen local agencies.
On Friday, United Way officials announced they had brought in $219,116.10 – or 84 percent – of the goal for the current campaign.
Our local United Way, however, has never quit before their goal is reached, and we’re sure this year will be the same even as officials and volunteers begin preparing for the 2014 fund drive.
The Weirton United Way works tirelessly to raise money each year to benefit organizations including the Weirton Christian Center, Dunbar Center, the Mary H. Weir Public Library, the Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Club of Weirton and the Hancock County 4-H, just to name a few. Without the United Way, many programs offered by these groups would no longer be available, including various after-school offerings for our youth, literacy programs and efforts to assist those in need with food, clothing and utilities.
The final fundraising event for the campaign year is the annual Pre-Super Bowl Tailgate party, set for Feb. 1 at the Serbian American Cultural Center. It is sure to be a night of fun and entertainment, with a variety of prize drawings throughout the evening.
Tickets for the event are available now at the United Way office or the Weirton locations of First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union.
We encourage area residents to consider purchasing a ticket or two and attend this great event.
If you aren’t able, we still hope you will consider making a contribution to the campaign as it winds down. There are so many of our residents who benefit from the programs the Weirton United Way funds each year.
Weirton has always helped its own, and we know the city will continue to do so for years to come.
