Festival of Nations a cultural showcase

Our region has a rich cultural heritage, spanning its history. From its original American Indian population, to the first European settlers, to the influx of immigrant steelworkers in the early 1900s, the Ohio Valley has a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds that should be recognized and celebrated.

That’s what makes this weekend special in Weirton with the return of the Festival of Nations. The annual event, organized by the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center, provides a showcase of the foods, dress and traditions of many cultures from around the world.

The festival, set to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Millsop Community Center, will feature presentations representing numerous nationalities, including the United States, Ukraine, China, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Poland and many more.

Performances by area dance schools, singers, musicians and others, including students from St. Joseph the Worker School and representatives of the Oglebay Institute, will be featured throughout the day.

Attendees will even have the opportunity to sample food from some of the represented nations.

This is a great event for our area residents, and brings in a good crowd each year. We are sure this year will be no different.

We urge our residents, no matter which town they call home, to consider coming to Weirton this weekend and seeing just what the festival has to offer.

Learn a little about our local heritage, check out some cultural dances and songs and try a few ethnic dishes.

This is an event that is not to be missed.
