A peek into the future

There have been many changes in Hancock County’s education in recent years, with upgrades in technology, new facilities and buildings all aimed at better preparing students for the future.

On Sunday, Weirton area residents will have a chance to see some of the results of that work first-hand.

An open house is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday to allow residents a chance to get a glimpse at the new Weirton Elementary School. Although the final touches have yet to be made, enough has been completed to allow tours of the classrooms, hallways and other areas of the school, which will open in the fall for approximately 900 students from pre-kindergarten through the fourth grade.

The state-of-the-art building includes a great deal of features which probably could not have been imagined for a local school even 10 years ago, with computer labs, two gymnasiums, a health center and much more available to the students.

There has been a great deal of excitement in the community surrounding the construction of the new school, so we are sure it will be a large crowd getting a sneak peek on Sunday. To assist with that, school officials are arranging for a shuttle service between Starvaggi Memorial Park and Weirton Elementary School. We encourage everyone planning to attend to make use of this service, as parking at the school will be limited.

A similar open house recently was held to allow residents to take a final look at Weirton Heights, Liberty and Broadview elemenary schools, the schools Weirton Elementary will replace. It is only right that, after saying goodbye to the old, we get to say hello to the new.

School officials also have announced a fundraising campaign to assist with some of the final touches at the new school, including books for in-classroom libraries, a welcome sign and more that wasn’t provided for under the levy and funding from the state School Building Authority.

This will be a great event for the Weirton community, and we encourage everyone to take some time Sunday to check out the latest addition to our area’s educational systems.
