Showcasing our athletic history

Excitement returned to the former Jimmy Carey Stadium recently with the announcement of a community project aimed at paying tribute to those Weirton residents who have made it to the pinnacle of the athletic world.

The idea came about following a television trivia show discussing Weirton’s Weir Avenue as having been the street in the nation to be the home of the greatest number of professional athletes.

That spurred a thought between the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center and many more to pay tribute to the professional athletes, not just from Weir Avenue, but from throughout Weirton.

Using the goal posts from the former downtown football stadium, two signs will be erected at the ends of Weir Avenue, listing the names of all those from Weirton who have reached the highest level of their professional sport – Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Football League.

Several names already have been located, but there are sure to be many more. If you happen to know of someone, we encourage you to contact the chamber or museum and let them know.

The signs, to be unveiled in August, also should serve as a source of inspiration to future athletes whose names can be added if they reach those same levels of play.

This is a great community project, and one we hope Weirton residents can take pride in. It is always great to celebrate an aspect of our communities and their people.
