5K race has become a community tradition

The Marland Heights 5K is making its return Friday, and we are sure it will, once again, be a success with runners from all over the region converging on the Weirton community.

The annual foot race, winding through the neighborhoods of Marland Heights, has become a tradition in Weirton. More than that, it has become a true community event during its long history.

Starting and ending at Marland Heights Park, the 5K is just the center point of the events planned for Friday evening. There will be a youth fun run at 6:30 p.m., with several heats for various age ranges, followed by the 5K at 7 p.m. and a two-mile fitness walk at 7:15 p.m.

Following all the races, runners, observers and supporters will be able to attend a picnic at the park.

We would like to thank the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation for putting this great event together each year. We also thank Hancock County Savings Bank, the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and all of the other sponsors for helping to make it all possible.

There is still time to register, whether you are an experienced runner or just looking to go for a nice stroll around the neighborhood.

We encourage all who are interested to come on out and make this year’s 5K a success.
