Saluting the stars of our communities

Included inside today’s edition is a special section that features the profiles of the area residents who have been selected as 2016 Community Stars.

We hope you will take the time to read their stories and remember that there are many good things happening across our region, thanks, in part, to the efforts of this year’s honorees. You’ll also find there’s a common thread that runs among all of them — they don’t seek the spotlight, but are always trying to help their friends, neighbors and their communities because it is the right thing to do.

It is their unselfish efforts that will be recognized when they gather for Monday’s annual dinner, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Hellenic Hall inside Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, located at the corner of South Fourth and South streets in Steubenville. The event is presented by Weirton Medical Center, with special support from the Fort Steuben Mall.

This year’s stars include the Rev. Charles Barkley, Catherine “Kitty” Ferguson, Ed Gotschall, Shirley Jenkins, Gianna Lemal, LaDonna Morris, Gray Nagy, David Rose, Dave and Irene Saho and Thomas Sweda. They come from all walks of life — this year’s class includes a minister and two firefighters. The youngest honoree is 7 years old.

The names of our stars might not be familiar, but they belong to the true unsung heroes of the Tri-State Area, those people who never think twice about sharing their time and talents to help make a difference in our region. They are the people who when they hear others say “No, that can’t be done,” are quick to step up and answer “Yes, let’s figure out a way to make this work.”

It’s a simple philosophy to life, one that the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times have recognized each year since 1998.

Congratulations are due each of this year’s stars. They truly help our communities shine.
