Share a meal, help fight hunger

You’re invited to a sit-down dinner Sunday afternoon, all in an effort to raise awareness for hunger issues in our communities.

A first-time event, the Rev. Ashley Steele, executive director of the Urban Mission, and volunteers are coordinating “The Longest Table” fundraiser, with seating outside the Urban Mission — at one long table — for at least 300 people and featuring real plates and silverware.

To be set up along North Street near the Urban Mission Ministries and head toward the War Memorial Building, guests may attend from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to break bread with a home-cooked meal, made with local produce and other natural ingredients, while also enjoying live musicians and crafters as well as partake in a silent auction.

Actually, this event is the “culminating event for Hunger Action Month,” according to Steele, who noted that throughout September the Urban Mission has been taking part in several events to help stave off hunger among area residents in need.

Statistics note that one in four adults and children go hungry each day. And according to Steele, some area residents don’t have access to fresh foods on a daily basis. In fact, the local numbers concerning hunger are actually higher than state levels.

Serving as a fundraiser for the Urban Mission’s hunger ministries programs, tickets are $30 each and available online at www.urbanmission.org; by calling (740) 282-8010; or by regular mail to the mission at 301 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, OH 43952. And with the holiday season just around the bend, any funds raised will be extremely beneficial to those in need in Steubenville and surrounding communities.

The Urban Mission’s “The Longest Table” offers another opportunity for our community to gather together and intermingle, all while enjoying wonderful fare and most importantly, helping others.

Please plan to share a meal Sunday in downtown Steubenville.
