An egg-cellent attraction

Unique and colorful best describe the newest project now on display in many locations in downtown Steubenville, and it seems as if it’s another well-thought-out design to bring tourists into town.

From Historic Fort Steuben to Downtown Bakery to the Grand Theater for Performing Arts, 17 3-foot eggs, handcrafted by more than 20 local artists, are on display in all their glory.

It’s another Nelson family idea that has come to fruition on the heels of the very successful Nutcracker Village and Advent Market held during the holiday season for the last two years at Historic Fort Steuben.

Therese Nelson said the idea was born from a similar program she saw in the Ukraine as part of a public art project. She said painting eggs at Easter time has been a Pysanki tradition in her family that was handed down by her mother’s Polish grandmother. Now that egg painting has gone to another level.

Much detail has been put into each 3-foot egg, as the artwork can take from eight to 48 hours to complete. And just as the famed nutcrackers are individualized with dozens of themes, each egg has a different theme for viewers to enjoy.

Touted as the only egg exhibition like it in the United States, the hand designed artwork can be viewed at the following Steubenville Revitalization Group member businesses through Mother’s Day: Historic Fort Steuben, Tri-State Financial Services, Two Brothers Dry Cleaners, Froehlich’s Classic Corner, Bookmarx Bookstore, Ed McCauslen’s Florist, Steubenville Popcorn Co., Drosselmeyer’s Nutcracker Shoppe, Mike’s Sweeper Center, PNC Bank, Huntington Bank, Antique Warehouse, Grand Theater for Performing Arts, Downtown Bakery, Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County and Nelson Fine Arts.

We are hoping the Steubenville Art Eggs display will grow in the years ahead. It’s definitely another reason to visit downtown Steubenville.
