Ready for some fairs and festivals

The themes of the many fairs and festivals that are held throughout the Tri-State Area each year vary widely, but they all follow a very simple formula — they offer the chance to spend quality time with friends and family.

Whether you’re looking for an afternoon that can take you back in time, a chance to enjoy ethnic foods or the opportunity to celebrate the life of a great entertainer, events across across our region feature activities that people of all ages can enjoy.

Inside today’s edition you will find our annual special section dedicated to the many fairs and festivals that are scheduled to be held during the next several months. Consider a random sampling of all that’s planned:

≤ Ohio Valley Frontier Days will return to Historic Fort Steuben June 3-4. The event offers a chance to step back in time and experience what life was like when our region was first settled.

≤ The corner of Fourth and South streets in downtown Steubenville will once again come alive with the sights, sounds and tastes of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Food Festival June 13-16. The event, which will be marking its 31st year, remains one of the most-anticipated weeks of the year.

≤ Dean Martin’s 100th birthday will be celebrated June 15-18 with events at many locations, including the Berkman Amphitheater, the Inn at Franciscan Square, Steubenville High School and the Spot Bar. One of the highlights of the weekend will be the return of the festival parade through downtown Steubenville on June 17. Deana Martin, Martin’s daughter, will serve as grand marshal.

≤ Steubenville’s Hometown Celebration will be held June 17, and will feature family friendly events, including a 1950s-themed dance on South Third Street in front of the City Building.

≤ If you’re looking to get an early start on your Independence Day celebrations, Thunder in the Ville will return June 23-24 at Indian Creek High School, with the annual fireworks display set for 10 p.m. June 24.

≤ Weirton will celebrate Independence Day with Red, White and BOOM! on July 1. The event will include a parade, the annual appearance by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and fireworks at 10 p.m.

≤ All Saints Greek Orthodox Church on West Street in Weirton will hold its annual food festival July 6-8.

≤ St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church will hold its Italian festival from noon to 8 p.m. July 30 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds.

≤ St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Weirton will hold its annual peach festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 12.

There are many options: The Harrison County Fair is scheduled for July 3-8, the Carroll County Fair will be held July 18-23, the Jefferson County Fair will be held Aug. 15-20, the Brooke County Fair will be held Sept. 8-10 and the Hancock County Oldtime Fair will be held Sept. 15-17.
