Summer concert season arrives
Music will return to downtown Steubenville on Thursday, as the 11th-annual summer concert series at the Louis and Sandra Berkman Amphitheater at Historic Fort Steuben gets under way.
The talented lineup is varied, as always, and we’re sure most Tri-State Area residents will be pleased. In fact, we’re hoping that means packed crowds enjoying warm Thursday evenings of entertainment as well as the famous view of the Ohio River and hills of West Virginia throughout the summer.
Thursday’s event will feature the Marcels, a group that will provide a doo-wop sound for the evening. The group’s first recording, back in 1961, was “Blue Moon.”
The music will continue on June 1 with the swing and blues night featuring Blue Lunch, and the Ron Retzer Trio will return to the stage on June 8 to offer a variety of songs and styles, from ballads, country, oldies, gospel, novelty to pop and rock’n’roll.
The Dean Martin Tribute Show takes center stage on June 15 as the community will celebrate Dean Martin’s 100th birthday. Martin’s famous melodies will be performed by Russ Loniello, Elvis Jr., the Sgro Brothers, Allen Karl, Donna Cunningham and Rose Angelica.
Country, old and new, will fill the downtown air on June 22 with Bill Gorby and the Musical Mercenaries. And Ohio Valley native favorite Joe Zelek will perform that evening.
Next up is a crowd favorite, when the Fab Four Tribute is staged on June 29. Beatlemania Magic, the Beatles Tribute Band, recreates the “magic” of Beatlemania.
With the beginning of July brings Patriotic Night at Berkman Amphitheater. Roz and Lynn will headline the July 6 evening, a mother-daughter local duo entertaining with classic oldies, and then the Tri-State Community Band will take the stage.
Those who enjoy classic rock and pop will want to be on hand on July 13, when Vanessa Campagna takes the stage. Countrified Country featuring the Stickers is set for July 20. Next up on July 27 will be US3 the Essence, a local group, which offers the sound of funk and rock, followed by No Bad Juju.
Golden oldies night is set for Aug. 3 featuring Deja Vu performing the sounds of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. The group Legend will follow with songs from the Temptations, Frankie Valli and Santana.
And on Aug. 10, the group Aftermath will perform, bringing its 1960’s period costuming and authentic sounds to the stage.
A special concert is slated for June 24 when the U.S. Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors will take the stage offering up Big Band music all the way up to contemporary tunes.
The amphitheater, located at the intersection of Market and South Third streets, has permanent seating for about 300, and approximately another 500 attendees who bring their own lawn chairs or blankets can be accommodated.
The city of Weirton’s concert series also gets going this week, with the first concert set for Friday night at the Weirton Event Center.
We appreciate the efforts of everyone who has helped organize the successful concert series in Steubenville year after year. Let the summer concert series begin.
