Our area has a lot to offer

It’s a complaint heard all too often: There’s nothing to do in our area.

It couldn’t be farther from the truth, as a glance at what’s planned for the next several days reminds us. Whether you’re looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, want to explore the area’s biking and hiking routes or just want to relax with your friends and neighbors and enjoy music in an outdoor setting, you’ll find there’s plenty to do.

Farmers’ markets will be open this evening at Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville and the parking lot in front of the Tractor Supply store on state Route 2 in Follansbee; on Thursday at the old Grant School site at the intersection of South and South Fourth streets in downtown Steubenville; and on Saturday in front of the former Pillsbury plant in Wellsburg and at the Misty River Marina in Toronto. The market in Weirton is held Mondays in the Goodwill parking lot.

The Steubenville Revitalization Group will offer a new way to explore downtown Thursday when it holds a 4-mile bike ride and 1-mile walk. The event, which will begin at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Tri-State Financial Services, 255 N. Third St., will feature a scavenger hunt, stops at the Steubenville Popcorn Factory on North Fourth Street and Malta’s Pizza on Market Street and the opportunity to enjoy sliders prepared by Naple’s Spaghetti House.

Then, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Stickers will take to the stage in the Berkman Amphitheater at Historic Fort Steuben as the summer concert series continues. It’s the first of three nights of outdoor music, which will continue Friday at the Weirton Event Center when De’Ja’Vu and Twice as Nice perform at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a car cruise.

The scene shifts back to the Berkman Amphitheater at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Roz & Lynn and the Tri-State Community Band will perform in a make-up event for the Patriotic Night concert that was postponed on July 6.

Summer’s in full swing — take advantage of the warm weather and get out, have some fun with old friends –make some new friends — and enjoy all that our region has to offer.
