Stars shine over our communities

The individuals who will be honored Monday evening as Community Stars have a very important thing in common — they have shown they are willing to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do.

That’s what we hope you will take away as you read through the special section that is included inside today’s newspaper and features the profiles of those who have been selected as the Class of 2017. You’ll have the opportunity to meet men and women from across the Tri-State Area who are dedicated to improving the lives of their friends and neighbors.

Their unselfish efforts will be recognized during Monday’s annual dinner, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Froehlich’s Classic Corner, located at the intersection of Fifth and Washington streets in downtown Steubenville. Weirton Medical Center is sponsoring the event, and special support is being provided by M&M True Value Hardware.

This year’s honorees include Bobbyjon Bauman, Connie Crawford, Bruce Hornick, Chelsea Householder, Bill Kerr, Karen Lundquist, Susan Nolan, Jason Polgar, Ralph and Jana Speer and Greg Tullis.

They help in many ways. They work with young people, help to raise money for those who suffer from cancer, they provide aid to local veterans, they support area students, they help those who have been diagnosed as having autism, they work to keep our region’s history alive and they help to ensure that an area cemetery can remain a beautiful place of rest and remembrance. And, while they might not have household names, their willingness to share their time and talents makes our region grow and become stronger. They embody a can-do attitude, and are willing to take on varied challenges time and time again.

It’s area residents who share that simple philosophy who the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times have been honoring since 1998. We congratulate them, and say thank you for jobs well done.
