Honoring the past, looking to the future

For 82 years, the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce has been an active part of our community, working to meet the needs of local businesses while providing events and services to benefit many of our residents.

The chamber has shown its pride in Weirton and surrounding cities of the Ohio Valley; pride in its past and pride in its people.

It showcased that pride against Tuesday with the chamber’s annual membership meeting, recognizing a few businesses for their important milestones and a few for their efforts to adapt and build toward a brighter future.

Three businesses were recognized by Chamber President Brenda Mull, each for celebrating 60 years as a part of the Weirton community. Holiday Lanes, Anile Pharmacy and the Mary H. Weir Public Library were presented with plaques recognizing their history and contributions.

Honored as business “superstars” were a group of businessmen and developers who have worked to breathe new life into the area. Those include John Rogerson, who for many years operated his business as the Weirton Book Company, recently renamed Prime as he expanded his services to include candy, ice cream and other offerings in addition to books. Also awarded was Dan Spanovich, who developed the Three Springs Crossing plaza, bringing several new businesses to Weirton, and Mike Hileman and Mike Chek, the developers of the Village at Colliers Way, which started with the Ruff Creek Market and has grown to include several restaurants, medical offices and other businesses.

The chamber, too, is looking toward the years to come, unveiling its new branding, with a redesigned logo and the slogan “Proud past…vibrant future,” along with a new mobile app to help better inform residents of the organization’s activities.

Those activities include the Weirton Christmas Parade and community Christmas lights, the Dr. Barbara A. Matey High School Business Symposium, Leadership Weirton, the “Shop Around Your Hometown” campaign, Business After Hours events, grand openings and the Wine and Dine at Williams.

It is important to remember our past, while looking toward what can be done for the next generation. The chamber and the local business community are doing just that.
