Earning their blue ribbon

Congratulations to the faculty, staff and students of A.T. Allison Elementary School!

Located in Chester, Allison is one of 349 schools across the country announced as a National Blue Ribbon School for this year. It was one of only three West Virginia schools to earn the honor, recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School.

To be named a National Blue Ribbon School indicates high accomplishments in academics, including meeting certain thresholds in standardized testing.

What makes this honor even more important for Allison Elementary is that only eight years ago, it was considered a school of choice, earning scores of only around 40 percent.

Those test scores have almost doubled in the years since, with the school also incorporating new technology, encouraging problem solving skills across the curriculum, introducing STEM and inviting the community — especially families — to get more involved in the pupils’ education.

Principal Toni Hartung said it best when referring to A.T. Allison Elementary as a family.

Only by working together could this major turnaround be accomplished. By coming together, the youth, teachers, parents and community have earned this honor.
