Bus drivers did an excellent job

To the Editor,

On Friday, January 25, 2013, Brooke County Schools were on a two-hour early dismissal due to the impending snow headed this way. Let me clarify that I am the secretary to the Transportation Director of Brooke County Schools.

When the snow started to hit sooner than anticipated it was decided upon by the superintendent and transportation director that it was better to keep the children in the schools where they were safe. With this it was felt that state and local road crews could get out on the roads to try and clear them before buses had to travel at the two-hour early dismissal.

All bus drivers were called and told to come to the garage and to put their chains on before leaving the lot. Every driver did this and got to their respective schools for the dismissal time.

Some drivers were nervous, especially the new ones experiencing driving for the first time in the snowy conditions. But I want all Brooke County parents of children who ride school buses to know that these 32 bus drivers never hesitated to prepare their buses and get to the schools to work hard at getting your children home safely and in as timely a manner as they could.

With chains on a bus, the bus can go no faster than 30 mph. Some buses got behind due to other vehicles who could not maneuver through the snow and blocked the roadways. It was posted online that one of the buses almost flipped over. I just want to make it clear that this did not happen. We had no buses have any issues or problems with driving the roadways.

Our drivers did an excellent job on Friday and they need to be applauded for it. They take their jobs very seriously and the students who ride their buses are their main priority at all times. I am proud to work with these drivers on a daily basis.

I would also like to give a thumbs up also to the State Road truck crews and city crews for trying as hard as they did to keep roads passable during this time. I know I for one made several calls inquiring about road conditions and know that they were doing the best they could.

Keep up the good work drivers because, Brooke County Schools bus drivers are the best!!
