Lead, follow or get out of the way

To the editor:

During his uplifting and inspiring inaugural speech delivered on March 4, 1933, our great nation’s 32nd president, the Democratic icon Franklin Delano Roosevelt, stated, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” which further defined us as a positive, can-do nation in facing adversity.

This credo had for many years defined us as a nation, indicating that even in cases of daunting challenges, the United States of America would ultimately prevail. Such has proven to be true many times throughout our history.

However, most recently Republicans and conservatives have adopted the strategy or promoting fear, doubt, paranoia, misinformation and negativity in an attempt to further advance their own political agenda.

For years, the right-wing entertainment talk media elite of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, et al, who promote themselves as legitimate journalists while literally being devoid of such credentials and possessing limited knowledge of history, government and economics, have had much of their ratings-driven agendas adopted by Republican and conservative lawmakers of late.

While such may be good for the ratings of the entertainers, such is anathema to good government and the legislative process.

It has been obvious now for some time that Republicans on the national level have prioritized partisan politics over the nation’s ultimate good.

The stock market has recently enjoyed record-encouraging numbers and near unparalleled positive growth, and job growth in the private sector has experienced positive gains monthly during the previous three-year period and counting.

All of this is happening in spite of Republican obstructionism and negativity.

As the noted entrepreneur Ted Turner and others have stated, “Lead, follow or get out of the way.”

Since Republicans apparently have been unwilling or perhaps incapable of leading or following, perhaps, for the good of the country, it is time for them to simply get out of the way.
