Johnson should help shore up programs
To the editor:
U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta, met with local Republicans and they didn’t like the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. Mr. Johnson, you will not find supporters of the ACA at a Republican picnic. We support the act. We were among the people with pre-existing conditions who couldn’t afford the outrageous cost of coverage.
My husband and I were uninsured for more than six years until we were eligible for Medicare. After retiring, we found that even with Golden Buckeye it would cost us each $6,000 a year for insurance. That’s $12,000 a year. It is probably more now.
Fortunately we have excellent doctors who charged us half of their regular office visit, helped us with samples of prescription medications and helped us find programs to secure expensive prescriptions from the manufacturers. Even with their help, we spent $7,000 a year on our medical needs. Not easy to do on retirement income and the part-time positions I found didn’t offer health insurance.
Johnson, you represent all of the citizens in this district, not just the Republicans. We need you to do your job and not waste time voting to repeal the act 40 times when you know that it will not pass in the Senate. We need you to work on the people’s business – shore up Medicare and Social Security and find ways to improve the Affordable Care Act – big programs can always be improved.
