Madonna picnic a success

To the Editor,

The Annual Friends of Madonna Picnic was held on Aug. 4. As director of advancement at Madonna High School, I want to express my sincerest appreciation to all of those who contributed to make this event a success.

The Friends of Madonna picnic has been a tradition for more than 30 years, providing food, entertainment, fun and games to the Weirton community. As the new director of advancement, this was my first major event at Madonna High School. This year’s event was held at the Madonna school grounds, which was a change from where the picnic had been held in years past. The day included performances by local dance studios, including Luann’s School of Dance and the Place for Dance. Also featured was the FiestaWare quarter toss, inflatables and games provided by Movin’ and Groovin’ Productions and music by disc jockey Eric Hilty. Food was prepared courtesy of the Madonna families; the classes provided root beer floats, slush puppies, popcorn and baked goods; and numerous drawings and games were available. The evening closed with a performance by the Joseph Sisters.

I could not have planned and executed this event without the help of the numerous volunteers. I would like to thank all of the students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff for their support in making this event a success, including the Madonna athletic programs and coaches, Madonna Student Government, Homer Laughlin China Co., Pepsi-Cola, Wine and Beverage Merchants, St. Joseph the Worker Parish, St. Paul’s Parish, Sacred Heart of Mary Parish, Luann’s School of Dance, the Place for Dance, WTOV-TV, WEIR-AM, the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times, Movin’ and Groovin’ Productions, Eric Hilty, Blaise Hogan, Ron Cooper and Jerry Woodland, Becky Biodillo and the entire kitchen staff, Beth DiGregorio and Jeanne Duffy, Dave Lammers and the Catholic school advisory council, Marlene Runkel and the alumni volunteers, Principal Steve Grasser, Mallori Linscomb, the advancement advisory committee, the Pulice family and so many more. The dedication of these people and countless others made the entire day a success.

Madonna High School seeks to prepare its students for a successful future, spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially in an environment of a caring community in the service of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The high school has been an important resource in our community since 1955. If you were unable to attend the picnic and are interested in Madonna High School, please check out our website at www.weirtonmadonna.org or contact the Madonna High School offices to schedule a visit.
