Make a difference

To the Editor,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Weir High School and Madonna High School Rotary Interact clubs. We would like to formally invite area businesses and organizations to participate in Make A Difference Day 2013.

For more than 20 years, USA WEEKEND Magazine and Points of Light have joined together to sponsor Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. Make A Difference Day is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Millions of volunteers from around the world will unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others on Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 26, 2013.

We would like to involve the whole community to take part in this one-of-a-kind opportunity to come together to make a positive impact in Weirton and influence surrounding areas. To do this, we are sponsoring a city-wide collection in support of the Weirton Salvation Army and Weirton Community Bread Basket. Our theme for this event is: “Soup, Socks, and Smiles. Warm Your Heart, Warm Your Sole.”

We would like to encourage area business and organizations to become a collection site for boxed, canned goods and socks from Oct. 14, 2013 to Oct. 26, 2013. On Saturday the 26th, we will be bringing all of the collected goods together and attempt to fill an entire Salvation Army Truck. Not only is this a chance to become active in the community, but it is also a chance to win a major donation for the two charities involved.

Recognizing the power of Make A Difference Day, other organizations join with USA WEEKEND and Points of Light each year to inspire and recognize the valuable work of volunteers. Newman’s Own supports the day by awarding $10,000 to the charities of each of 10 National Honorees and three City Awardees. We need as many businesses and organizations as possible to get involved to make this a successful project.

Please, if you are interested in making a difference in the Weirton community contact Renee Howard at Weir High School or Lauren Parsons at Madonna High School.
