Benefit will help battle pain of TN

To the editor:

Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as “Tic Douloureux,” is described as the most excruciating pain known to humanity. It is sometimes described as the suicide disease. TN is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal, or fifth, cranial nerve, one of the most widely distributed nerves in the head. The pain of TN is defined as either classic or atypical. Atypical pain is present as a constant, burning sensation or severe pain affecting a widespread area of the face or head. With atypical trigeminal neuralgia, there is not a remission period, and symptoms are difficult to treat.

It is estimated that one in 20,000 people suffer from atypical trigeminal neuralgia. My daughter, Lynette Wilinski Galiley, is one of them.

For the past 16 years, not a day goes by that she is not in pain, and many days the pain is so debilitating that the most simple daily routines become difficult or impossible. Over the course of her illness, she as been medicated and gone through pain management programs. In addition, she has endured several surgical procedures (seven) in an attempt to eliminate or reduce the pain. All attempts to improve her quality of life have failed.

A neurosurgeon at the University of Missouri Medical Center has recommended the placement of a deep brain neuro-stimulator to help control the pain. She was scheduled for the procedure, but was recently informed that her health insurance carrier would not approve it. As parents, we would do anything to help alleviate the pain of our children.

Since my daughter’s health insurance won’t accept the responsibility for her surgical procedure, a benefit has been planned to help finance this procedure.

The date of the benefit is Dec. 14 at the Spot Bar, beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $15, which includes food. I realize this is a busy time of the year, but we hope that many of you will support our daughter’s quest for a medical procedure that could improve her quality of life.
