Some Christians are hypocritical

To the editor:

With all that has been said regarding the treatment of gay people during the last few months, and in light of the new gay discrimination law in Arizona, I thought it was about time I chimed in on this matter. I am so over, yet slightly amused at, how some Christians try to justify and defend their archaic and hypocritical discrimination of gay people. They use the Bible to try to justify their beliefs that homosexuals are living in sin and should be not be afforded the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts, even though parts of Bible espouse more violence than a Quentin Tarantino movie and other parts provide more contradiction than “Fox and Friends,” while still other parts must think people are as stupid as a Sarah Palin quote on foreign relations.

Yeah sure, there are a few passages that call “a man lying with another man” an abomination, but Leviticus also says that eating shellfish is a sin. And I don’t see too many Christians protesting outside of Red Lobster. How come? Did I miss the memo on the varying degrees of abomination? Or the symposium on how to justifiably denigrate your neighbor?

The Bible also says that women shouldn’t talk in church or wear gold or pearls, and that children should be put to death for disrespecting their parents. It also justifies rape, as long as the rapist marries his victim. Should these ideas be written into law as well? Of course not, that would be silly, as well as grotesque and vitriolic.

The Bible was written thousands of years ago in a time when many basic understood principles of today where incomprehensible. I ask that Christians please stop trying to use the beliefs of quasi-Neanderthals to validate and comfort them in their own ignorant and myopic mindsets.

Which brings me back to my original point. Christians or members of any other religious denominations, for that matter, can believe whatever they want, just as long their belief doesn’t adversely affect other people. Religious rights don’t trump human rights. The United States Constitution guarantees that.
