Politicians are ruthless people
To the Editor,
Political behavior is found from your local bridge club, to the local fire and police departments, all the way up to the national level. The tools of politics are ridicule, mockery, disparagement, rumors, distortions, exaggerations, insinuations, false accusations, half-truths and outright lies. Politicians deprive opponents of credit for success and exaggerate their every fault and failure. Facts are irrelevant, and the truth is meaningless to politicians. It’s a dirty, hateful game.
Why do the worst people rise to the top in politics? Decent people are undone by their decency. Successful politicians lack the compunction that decent people have. Successful politicians are self-serving, self-centered, hard-driving, aggressive people. They care little or not at all about others. Worse, they give the appearance of being friendly, caring people. They are willing to lie, cheat, threaten and bribe. They are willing to destroy the reputations and lives of others. A decent person would have to reduce her or himself to that level to successfully compete in the political world.
