Shelter foundation continues to be active

To the Editor,

The Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation has done some amazing things, while saving many animals.

We believe all lives matter. No animal is “put to sleep” due to space or time limits.

“Euthanasia” should not be a primary means of population control. It is not humane, nor is it effective.

What does work are adoption events, spay/neuter clinics, education services and clinics, responsible pet ownership, and foster programs. It is proven the programs HCASF provide work.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter staff and our volunteers provided such services, resulting in record number of adoptions and a community fully connected to its shelter, a shelter citizens could all be proud of by our no/low euthanasia rate.

These programs take many work hours and could not have been possible without volunteer Staff and Foundation members. In 2015 alone, adoption event hours were over 250 with over 2,000 hours from event support staff and foundation members alike.

In 2015 we had a record number of adoptions and community events:

≤ Over 310 dogs and 420 cats found forever homes.

≤ Six low cost spay/neuter cat clinics, fixing over 450 cats.

≤ Paid for over 40 cats spay/neutered through our community feral cat funds.

≤ HCASF held a free TNR seminar to everyone interested in helping solve feral cat issues

≤ Outreach educational programs on responsible pet ownership to the community & schools.

≤ Over 35 adoption offsite events held throughout our region finding dogs forever homes

≤ Highly connected with our community on animal services via social media and web site.

≤ We are transparent and encourage all citizens to become humane animal care advocates.

For 2016 to present:

≤ All programs continued and expanded from 2015

≤ As of June 1, 2016, our adoption numbers tracked higher than in 2015, for another record year.

≤ The citizens approved our 4 yr levy funding ballot by 72.5 percent, the highest support ever.

≤ Expanded to monthly spay/neuter clinic services for cats, was to exceed 600 cats fixed.

≤ Increased dog adoption events to 4 per month with expanded locations.

≤ Returning is our very popular 5K Run/Walk and Bark in the Park community events.

Since July 1, 2016:

≤ Continued our sold out low cost spay/neuter services, fixing 150 cats

≤ Paid for over 30 cats spay/neutered through our community feral cat funds

≤ Community TNR assistance for those in need of feral cat help.

≤ Provided two dog adoption events and will expand adoption events with Animal Rescue League, Bark in the Park and 5K Run/Walk community events go on as scheduled.

I hope these facts provide everyone an insight into just how involved and effective HCASF was operating the shelter for Hancock County and about our many programs and outreach for humane animal care.
