Entitlements come first

To the Editor,

Let’s set the redistribution of wealth — Fox News and Sean Hannity like to spin with your dollar.

That’s the government’s job, to redistribute tax dollars. But the Hannities of the world want to make it personal, moaning that the government is “taking my money and giving it to someone else.”

Sorry, Hannity. It does not work that way. Every IRS booklet has a pie chart that shows how the government spends a percentage of every tax dollar it spends. It’s the government’s obligation to redistribute tax viability of the government to work for everyone.

But no one is taking your dollar and giving it to someone else. The only thing not to like about our present tax system is that it favors the rich. The only thing not to like about the next tax plan being proposed by the Republican Party is that it favors the rich.

If America is to be the leader of the free world, we must strive to feed the oppressed in the world. Instead, we keep giving other nations money to build up their war arsenal with our tax dollars.

Let’s raise taxes to the Clinton era’s 39 percent rate and offer no trick deductions to anyone making more than $500,000 a year. Balance the budget just like Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton did.

Entitlements first, war arsenals last. Food will buy peace much sooner than bullets.
