Set your affections on the right items
Can you believe it is December, again? I have been told “the older you get the faster time goes” but who would have believed a line like that? However this statement seems to be true even though every day still has the same number of minutes and every year has the same number of days. So what makes the time seem to accelerate? My thought is we are looking at a reality of life revealing to us how precious the commodity of time really is. We can all remember, as we were growing up, our birthdays were getting near we would say our age is 6 and a half, or nine and a half, but now my age doesn’t change until the actual day and time of my birth.
Jeremiah 8:20 may have something to do when considering we are running out of time. When faced with a deadline it seems minutes turn into seconds. In this chapter, Jeremiah is discussing the situation facing them, i.e. time is running out. “The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved.” Maybe we are looking at the same thing? Reflect for a moment over the past year. Consider your accomplishments, reflect on the low moments you faced. Now, pause and see how God carried you through all of these times and show your thanks to Him. Is something missing from your year? Does reflection reveal a lack of relationship with God?
John 5:39-40 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. “If changes are need in your life, change them.
Consider also where most people’s minds are focusing. This month the focus is more and more about our Saviour. Celebrations, parades, store windows and not a few churches willingly acknowledge the birth of the Lord. I mentioned how fast time seems to go as we age, so consider how your time is being spent. Let’s not focus on wringing our hands about how bad the world has become and all the negatives that go with it. Instead, center your affections where you should.
Colossians 3:2 (KJV) “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth”. So, we may have the holiday season upon us and considering what we will be doing to celebrate, let’s all be sure to keep our affections on the right items.
This has been a wonderful year in many ways, so I just want to thank you for being a blessing to our community and to me personally. This is my last article for this year so may you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. One last thing, remember the words of Psalm 136:1 “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
