Feeling the Holy Burn in your life

John 5:35 “He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.”

I’ve often wondered what people will say about me if I should die before our Lord comes to take us to be with Him. How will they remember me? What words will they use to describe me? Will I have a good reputation amongst people? The Bible says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches” (Pr.22:1); and “A good name is better than precious ointment” (Ecc. 7:1).

In today’s Scripture reading, Jesus says concerning John the Baptist, “He was a burning and a shining light.” What an honor to be remembered and spoken of in such a way by Jesus! The word “burning” comes from the Greek word “kaio” which means “a light that is burning as if it were ablaze with fire.” Likewise, the word “shining” comes from the Greek word “phaino” which means “to shed light; radiate.” Jesus was saying of John, ‘He was a blazing fire who reflected light and radiated glory to point people to the Lord’! I don’t know about you but I desire Jesus to think the same of me.

As believers, we are to burn for the Holy One and holy things. If we are burning, we will be shining. To burn is to shine. Get this in your spirit: YOU ARE FLAMMABLE! If you are flammable, you need ignited. Ignition requires a spark — a match. God is more than willing and more than able to set you ablaze by His Spirit. As the old Christian chorus says, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going.” Ask Him to help you burn! He has matches to ignite your fire.

Look at these four key areas in which He desires you to burn: 1.) Relationship – God desires you to burn in your heart for relationship with Him. After Jesus had resurrected from the grave, He appeared to two men on the Emmaus Road. Following the revelation of Himself to them, they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Lk. 24:32). Like these two men, our hearts must burn within us for communion with Him. Jesus told the Ephesian believers to not be lukewarm, rather be hot and “be zealous” (Rev. 3:15-16,19). Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit” (Jn. 15:5). Connectedness is a key to burning. CONNECT TO REFLECT! 2.) Prayer – God desires you to burn in prayer to Him. The Bible says, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (Jas. 5:16). Somebody once said, “Prayer is not poetry; heat it up!” The more you pray, the more you stay. If you’re not praying, you’re straying. Your prayer life should be ablaze with passion and boldness, knowing that our God hears and answers. Jesus made a way for you to have direct access to the Father. The blood made a way! Pray like you believe it and appreciate it! 3.) Word – God desires you to burn with His Word in you. God’s Word is food for your soul. It is the lifeline for your faith. “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Ro. 10:17). More word = more faith; more faith = more light; more light = more burn! The prophet, Jeremiah, said the word of the Lord “was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones” (Jer. 20:9). Feed on the Word of God; obey the Word of God; speak the Word of God into the atmosphere. In other words, FEED, HEED, AND SEED! 4.) Service – God desires you to burn in service for Him. The Bible says, “Be fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (Ro. 12:11). Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Mt. 5:14). You are meant to light the path of life for the world around you, attempting to turn their hearts to Christ. Get this: YOUR BURNING LEADS TO THEIR TURNING! The more you burn for Him, the more others will turn to Him. Everything you do should be done for His glory. The Bible says to serve “as to the Lord, and not to men” (Eph. 6:7). Serve Him with gladness, serve others with joy, and serve with excellence.

A Blessing for You Today: In the Name of Jesus, I bless you to burn like an inferno for the Lord. May you shine like the sun for Him. I bless you to have a red-hot desire for communion with Him, a blazing and fervent prayer life unto Him, an unquenchable hunger and thirst for His Word, and a life of fiery service for Him. May you be a burning and shining light!

Your Declaration for Today: On this day, I declare that I am flammable. I am meant to burn and shine for the Lord. I declare that I crave communion with my Lord. My prayer life is passionate. I will devour His Word and it will be like fire in my bones. I shall serve him and others with an excellent and fervent spirit. I’m connecting and reflecting, praying and staying, heeding and seeding, and burning and turning! In the Name of Jesus, I declare it! Amen!
