LONGTIME DIRECTOR — Delores Wiggins has been directing the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Mass Choir for the past 30 years. “It has been an honor, and I am very proud of this group of people,” said Wiggins.

STEUBENVILLE — Wylene Alexander had never performed the solo from the song “I Need Thee” before the rehearsal.
But moments later — her voice soaring high then blending in with the choir — Alexander was comfortable with the song.
Alexander is one of approximately 30 members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Mass Choir to join their voices to practice for the annual performances to honor and remember the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
A choral performance is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Second Baptist Church, and the choir also will participate at 6 p.

"Seven Pounds"-Wow
Mon, January 5, 2009 @ 10:03AM
Not exactly an uplifting, holiday feel-good movie, but "Seven Pounds" proved a thinker's delight. If you're interested in seeing the film, stop reading now because it's impossible to discuss without giving away the plot. "Seven Pounds" is a film that, once seen, you can't watch again. The mystery will be gone. Stop back after seeing it. If you've already seen it or don't care, then, please, by all means, read on. "Seven Pounds" is the film that makes Will Smith not just a great actor, but, in my opinion, one of the all-time legends. It takes him and stretches him beyond the wise-cracker, the action hero or Muhammad Ali and turns him into a believeable, depressed, mystery man whose every action has the audience trying to guess what's up. "Seven Pounds" starts out by being just plain confusing. Will's a tax man. He's an aerospace engineer. He drives a Crown Victoria. He drives a classic Corvette.

New Year - New Plan
Mon, January 5, 2009 @ 8:31AM
Every New Year people from around the world say they are going to lose weight, stop smoking, stop this, start doing more of that, yada yada yada. I never do that. I plan to work out more in 2009. It is not a New Years Resolution, it is a fact. I planned on working out more in 2008 but my gym membership ran up and various home upgrades or fixes along with other things tied up all my money. Recent Christmas money has put me in a better position to renew my membership. I also have extra motivation to get my body right for my honeymoon this year. I don' t want a big gut in all my beach pictures ya know. I think if you need a new year to change something in your life then you really don't want change that something or you are all talk and will not change that something. If you have decided that you need to stop smoking then why not start tomorrow? If you decided you are going to be nicer to the homeless when they ask for money then why not start tomorrow? If you have to wait

Random Thoughts

Slow day at the Star. Just waiting on 5 so I can laugh at people do the American... or Worldly thing and get plastered and wake up tomorrow wondering why you did that last shot, or downed your drink before you passed out/fell asleep. A recent study shows that American Gamers use enough electricity to power San Diego for an ENTIRE year. So while trying to be eco-conscious, I have undermined my own attempts by aiding in this waste... O well, it was definitely worth it, even trade I'd say. Stop paper bills, recycle old magazines, bottles and cans... help power San Diego for a year while looking for the blue key to get into the castle. My Guins need to get their act together if they hope to even make the playoffs. Going 5-8-1 in December is not a playoff team. It is the Pens of old, before Geno Malkin helped elevate this team to where it needed to be. Crosby is the main man, but Geno would be his Batman to Superman. Be safe, have a DD, and have a great New Y

Where's my bailout?
Tue, December 9, 2008 @ 8:48AM
Everybody needs a bailout these days and from the looks of things, it's a line that could be way, way long. The whole problem is people don't know how to live within their means -- a problem that partly stems from people not being taught about finances and not being shown the example. I know people, for example, who simply don't pay bills, figuring there aren't any consequences to such a practice. What's up with that? I don't know if they think there's a money tree out in their yard that will start blooming sometime soon and come to their rescue or what? On the other end of handling finances, I am fortunate to know people who have a firm grip on financial reality -- something they've grasped all their lives. They're old school, people who don't believe in credit cards, in not buying something until you have money set aside for the purchase and practice the envelope system, putting money in them in anticipation of this bill to come and that one to follow. Should we really be bail

Not Killing My Husband for Christmas
Mon, December 15, 2008 @ 5:02PM
I didn't do it, and I'm proud of myself, because he was really pushing it. First, it was the Christmas tree. He has to argue with me over the lights every single year. (Commercial interruption: Sierra wanted to be in this blog. Now she is. That is all.) Anyway, he always complains that I want too many lights on the tree. He's always accusing me of trying to burn down the house. My argument: 1) They are flippin' Christmas tree lights. They aren't burning anything down. 2) Four strands of Christmas lights aren't dangerous. Really, they are not deadly weapons or anything, I promise. 3) Maybe burning down the house would be okay; we'd get the insurance money and we wouldn't have to replace the windows. 4) ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Then, he made fun of our Christmas tree ornaments. Okay, some are old, some are brokenish and some are handmade, but they all have stories behind them. He had to make a point of throwing away one this
