Summer Concerts

May 23, 2013 - Craig Howell
Friday, May 24 will see the return of the summer concert series at the Weirton Event Center. This year, gates are set to open at 6 p.m., with music beginning at 7 p.m. There appears to be a variety of musical acts set to appear this summer, and I hope our residents consider taking some time to come to Weirton and check out at least a couple of these shows. Friday's concert will feature local band Legend, playing selections of classic rock and roll, as well as an Elvis tribute artist. Other weeks will feature many area favorites, such as the Joseph Sisters, US Kids, Spinning Jenny and Threes Company. Jill West and Blues Attack will make their return, as will the Wheeling Symphony as they once again offer their free concert on July 5. To top it all off, Beatlemagic will be coming to town in August to conclude the series. This Beatles tribute group is said to be among the best of that particular genre, so I'm sure it will bring in the crowds. That's just what this activity needs. Last year, the concert series' first, saw limited attendance, sometimes only a dozen or so people bothered to show up. That's disappointing, because there are a lot of people and businesses who have worked hard to make these shows possible. The Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau has led the way, getting the Event Center constructed to start, and then booking each act. Businesses have stepped up to assist with the costs. I often hear people, especially younger people, complain that there is nothing to do in "The Ton." I disagree, and hope others do as well. These summer concerts are just one of the many things going on in our community, and all it takes is a quick look around to find out about some of the other events, whether they are fairs, parades, special activities in the park, etc. And if there is something else you would like to see, perhaps you could make some suggestions. Until then, I encourage everyone to come out and spend a couple hours listening to some live (and free) music. Bring your family, friends and lawn chairs and enjoy the night.
